More than 200 plastic bags, or at least one for every weekly supermarket visit within two years—that’s how much waste one person can prevent simply by reusing grocery bags. Fortunately, the country’s biggest supermarket chain provides an option for environmentally concerned consumers.
The brainchild of the country’s two biggest consumer-goods giants, SM Supermarket and Unilever Philippines, the GreenBag is the first major reusable bag campaign with a truly mainstream reach. The recyclable carry-ons are given free to all SM Supermarket shoppers with a minimum purchase of P500 worth of Yellow Tag items, including at least one Unilever product—an easy task considering how families generally spend more than P500 on their weekly groceries and how many of their favorite items are from Unilever.
Since the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act was passed in 2000, many organizations have also implemented measures to address the solid waste management issue. The genius behind the SM-Unilever partnership is that it makes it easy for consumers to participate. Thanks to the GreenBag, anyone passing by SM to do their shopping can contribute to the cause and even earn rewards if they are SM Advantage Club members. Two additional points are given to the cardholder every time he or she chooses to use the GreenBag instead of the usual plastic bags. For those with bigger families, the shopper can use a maximum of three GreenBags and get six extra points.
Made of recyclable and washable material, each GreenBag is equivalent to two regular-sized plastic bags and can be used for two year’s worth of weekly grocery trips.
So far, thousands of people are already GreenBag-ging their groceries, helping minimize overall pollution and the health risks posed by landfills. Be among the new breed of environmentally conscious consumers and get your GreenBag at the following SM Supermarket branches: Makati, Megamall, Sta. Mesa, Manila, Fairview, North EDSA, San Lazaro, Southmall, Pampanga, Bacoor, Dasmarinas, Sta. Rosa, Batangas, Lipa, Lucena, Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Bacolod, and in Savemore branches in Alabang, Marikina, Jaro, Iloilo, Mactan, Angono, and Elizabeth Mall.
