What’s in a shopping bag?
For those who were at SM Makati during the “green carpet” launch of the GreenBag—SM Supermarkets’ and Unilever Philippines’ joint environmental effort—a shopping bag can be a way to help save the planet.
Launched in celebration of World Environment Day, the GreenBag is the first-of-its-kind reusable shopping bag in the country. Made of durable non-woven material, it is equivalent to two regular-sized SM Supermarket bags and can be used for up to two years. It comes free with every P500 worth of SM Supermarket Yellow Tag items, including some Unilever products. Reusing the GreenBag adds two extra points to one’s SM Advantage Card (maximum of three bags per visit only). Through this, both companies hope to engage customers in caring for the environment. The GreenBag is the initial project of the SM CARES (Concerned and Responsible Eco-Shoppers) campaign.
The event gathered the most influential environmental advocates in the corporate, NGO, and government sectors, including executives from SM and Unilever Philippines, representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Solid Waste Management Commission, Smokey Mountain, Sagip Pasig Movement and other eco-groups, as well as the media.
“SM and Unilever are taking the environmental initiative one leap forward,” said former DENR secretary Elisea Gozun during the launch. “This will go a long way in solving the solid waste management problem in our country.”
The project merges the two leading companies’ commitment to ecology. In its malls, SM implements a comprehensive solid waste management program that includes waste trade markets and recycling seminars. For its part, Unilever established wastewater treatment facilities in its plant and works with the Smokey Mountain community.
“These two companies have proven themselves as true and committed supporters of the DENR’s environmental programs on clean water, clean air, and solid waste management,” noted Emy Aguinaldo, deputy executive director of the National Solid Waste Management Commission. “As our partners, you made our job in the government a lot easier and we thank you for that,” she addressed them.
